At least 129 people died in a violent football match

More than 120 people have died after violence erupted at a soccer match in Indonesia.

Police said at least 129 were killed. Children and police officers are understood to be among those trampled to death.

Police said people were killed when angry fans stormed the soccer field after a match at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, East Java, on Saturday afternoon.

Authorities said the violence stemmed from clashes between supporters of two Indonesian soccer teams.

Clashes were reported between supporters of the two rival teams inside the stadium after the Indonesian Premier League match ended with Persebaya Surabaya defeating Arema Malang 3-2.

“In the incident, 127 people were killed, two of whom were police officers,” East Java police chief Nico Afinta said in a statement on Sunday. The death toll continued to rise after his statement.
