Now that the M2-powered MacBook Pro is on sale, we can take a look at Apple’s latest macOS laptop. After the revelation at WWDC 2022, this entry-level MacBook Pro seemed like a great way for Apple to use a lot of spare parts and old designs, but would it have any value to the consumer? With the review embargo now lifted, we find out those who had early access to Apple’s hardware …

It’s probably worth noting that, compared to laptops from five or six years ago, the M2 MacBook Pro is a major step up, with a performance that would be much sought after in 2016. Just because it’s better than the average laptop from a few years ago. it doesn’t mean it’s the best laptop right now. Apple has a wide portfolio of Macs, and if you want to look outside of macOS, there are many more options in the Windows and Linux world.
Those who opt for this MacBook Pro will buy a design that frankly looks tired. There may be a school of thought that is buying “a design classic,” but Apple has shown with the larger MacBook Pro models that it can still offer an impressive shape and package with much more function than it offers. the 13-inch MacBook. Pro. Inexplicably, all the points that Apple believes are worth the broken models are missing. Monica Chin for The Verge:
“This MacBook Pro has exactly the same chassis as the 13-inch MacBook Pro M1 that was launched in 2020 (which used a design dating back to 2016). It’s the same 2560 x 1600 screen, the same Magic Keyboard, the same two Thunderbolt ports, the same Touch Bar and the same slightly sharp sides.Remember all those new (technically old) design features such as HDMI ports, SDXC slots and MagSafe charging that Apple put on the MacBook Pro models it launched at the end of 2021.? Yes, none of them “
Perhaps the biggest problem with using the old design is that of the screen. Larger MacBook Pro laptops have the new mini-LED technology, and even the MacBook Air, which retains the older LED / IPS display, still picks up on the new physical design. CNN’s Mike Andronico:
“The 14-inch MacBook Pro, the 16-inch MacBook Pro and the new MacBook Air M2 have adopted virtually bevelless screens with only a small notch at the top; the thick black edges around the MacBook Pro M2’s screen are feel like a lost space by comparison. The new 13-inch MacBook Pro still comes with a 720p webcam and while it will be fine for most people’s video calling needs, there’s a noticeable lack of detail. and clarity when comparing it next to the 1080p Camera to my 14-inch Pro “.
The new MacBook Pro has two advantages that are worth considering. The first is that the M2 will offer more performance than the M2 on the MacBook Air because the Air is a fanless design compared to the fan-equipped Pro; which will allow the M2 to run a little warmer giving a touch of performance … but that still won’t be enough to get close to the power of the M1 Pro and m1 Max chipsets on larger MacBook Pro laptops. Brian Westover of PCMag:
“The M2 chip is an improvement over the M1, but not as significant an increase as the previous M1 Pro and M1 Max options, and the MacBook Air M2 will arrive soon, offering what will likely be similar performance with the same processor , but a fully updated design “.
The other area is battery life, with Apple reporting that the MacBook Pro offers 20 hours of battery life, two more than the Air. Jacob Krol:
“In particular, our battery test exceeded the promised 20 hours of video playback that Apple promised. In our tests, the 13-inch MacBook Pro lasted 23 hours and 15 minutes with a 4K playback test. set the brightness to 50% and turned off connectivity during playback. It’s pretty impressive, and in everyday use, it’s hard to kill the MacBook Pro. “
While the MacBook Pro M2 seems to be a competent laptop, this is isolated. Once you introduce the 14-inch MacBook Pro, which has much more power, and the upcoming MacBook Air M2, which offers better value for money with the latest design, it’s hard to justify this MacBook. Brian Heater for TechCrunch:
“It’s actually the last 13-inch MacBook wrapped around a better processor. It’s hard to get mad at that. It’s just that, in a line that contains the 14-inch MacBook Pro and the upcoming 13-inch Air, This is not a complaint that can often be made against a company like Apple, which has traditionally worked hard to reduce its product lines, and while more options are generally a good thing, to most consumers in most situations, frankly it ‘s not a difficult decision. “
Apple will launch the MacBook Air M2 in a few weeks. There may be some bugs in this package, but right now the glowing recommendation of all MacBook Pro reviews is to wait and see what else Apple has to offer, the MacBook Air seems like a much better option.
