Jorge Martin will start the 2022 Australian MotoGP from pole position after setting a new lap record at Phillip Island in qualifying.

The Pramac Ducati rider will be joined on the front row by Repsol Honda’s Marc Márquez and Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia, with Bagnaia’s team-mate Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia) and world championship leader Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) at the head of the second row .

Marquez hitched a tow behind Bagnaia for the first race, the Honda rider making a big front stop via MG, while Bagnaia held Martin’s provisional pole with the mid-session tire change.

Bagnaia was again a tow for Marquez on the final lap, while Martín went solo to take pole by 0.013 seconds over Marquez.

Aleix Espargaro was towed by teammate Maverick Vinales to briefly reach second, before dropping to fourth.
