While the original Game Boy is considered an iconic piece of hardware in the annals of game history, recently a talented modder showed us how it would look and feel with the Game Boy Advance landscape design. But instead of producing a fantastic 3D rendering, they went on to build a fully functional prototype.
Some would say that the portrait design of the original Game Boy (with the controls below the screen) was perfect, although in terms of ergonomics, the landscape design of the original Game Boy Advance (with the controls located on both sides of the screen) provides better ergonomics and improvement. balance in the hands, which makes it more comfortable to hold during longer game sessions. It was a shame that the original GBA still dropped the ball with a color screen impossible to see that had no lighting.
A handheld computer with a landscape design often also offers more space for a larger screen, but in this case, modder Obirux wanted to move the maximum of authentic features from the original Game Boy to his custom creation, with the only update obvious was the use of better screen technology with proper backlighting and the ability to easily change a game’s color palette.
This Gameboy is not like any other
According to Obirux, two original Game Boy shells were sacrificed to create the custom body for this prototype, which is why it looks so much like the classic handheld console, just turned sideways. The ignition switch, volume wheel, link port, headphone jack and original buttons and steering pad controls were moved to the redesign, which looks so incredibly polished that many would suspect it is a long lost prototype made by Nintendo itself.
Unfortunately, fans of Obirux’s latest creation can only drool over the prototype, as they apparently have no plans to sell a kit with the necessary parts so others can make the same modifications. It’s a shame, but hopefully they plan to share a more detailed breakdown video of how they customized the OG Game Boy’s shells, so aspiring seamstresses have a better idea of how it all went.
