January 6 hearings: Ivanka Trump recalls father calling Pence “a flash” in final call
The third public hearing of the House committee on January 6 featured an extraordinary testimony on the pressure campaign of Donald Trump and law professor John Eastman to get then-Vice President Mike Pence to cancel the 2020 election .
The committee tried to show that Trump knew he had lost the election but “monitored a plan” to overturn the result, “when the vice president refused to do so, he unleashed a violent mob against Pence at the Capitol.”
Evidence was presented that Pence told Trump “many times” that the Eastman plan was illegal and unconstitutional. Retired Judge Michael Luttig testified that he would have “put my body on the road” to prevent the election from being annulled.
Family members and Trump staff testified about a “heated” call with Pence that morning, after which the president rewrote his rallying speech with sharp lines about his vice president. He later tweeted that the angry rioters were advancing, with some less than 40 feet from Pence when he was evacuated.
The day after the failed attempt to revoke the election, Eastman sent an email asking for a pardon, which he did not receive. Luttig warns of Trump’s threat to democracy and stays.

The January 6 testimony overturns Trump’s lawyer’s argument for canceling the election
A retired federal judge who formerly had a lead attorney for Donald Trump’s campaign among his attorneys flatly rejected the idea that Vice President Mike Pence had the authority to interfere with the Electoral College count.
J Michael Luttig, a former Fourth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals judge, rejected the idea backed by his former secretary, John Eastman, who argued that the vice president could get results from states where the Trump campaign had claimed fraud (no evidence). .
“There was no basis in the United States Constitution or law for the theory defended by Mr. Eastman. Not at all. None,” Mr. Luttig in the House Committee on January 6 on Thursday.
