12 minor injuries after Toronto Island ferry crashes into dock

An investigation is now underway after a Toronto Island ferry struck the pier at Jack Layton Terminal Saturday afternoon, injuring a dozen people, including two children.

Toronto police, fire and paramedics rushed to the waterfront ferry terminal just after 5pm to a collision.

“There was a collision with the vessel when it was docking and this caused several passengers to fall forward resulting in their injuries,” said Toronto Police Duty Insp. said Lori Kranenburg.

The vessel involved is the Sam McBride Ferry. Kranenburg said there were 912 passengers and six crew members on board the ferry at the time of the incident.

Toronto paramedics said twelve people suffered minor injuries, most of whom were later released. Five people, including two children, were taken to hospital for treatment.

Acting Sup. Victoria Pfuetzner of Toronto Paramedic Services added that most of the injuries were to the knee.

Toronto Fire District Chief Steve Buckingham said 10 of his appliances, including two fire boats, responded to the incident to help disembark passengers and sort out the injured.

The cause of the accident is unknown.

The Ministry of Labor and the Ministry of Transport have been informed.

“So right now, Toronto police are making sure the evidence is secured for the investigation to begin, and then there will be a discussion with the other agencies about who takes the lead on what part,” said Duty Insp. Kranenburg said.
