Alberta tornado warnings dropped, but RCMP says homes were damaged in the Sundre area

No fatalities have been reported, but the RCMP says several homes in central Alberta were damaged after a strong storm passed through the area Thursday afternoon.

An RCMP spokesman told Global News he was aware of “definitive damage” to at least six homes in the Sundre, Alta area, specifically near Township Road between Range Road 44 and Range Road 45.

He noted that shortly before 5 p.m., police were able to confirm that all residents of that particular area were counted.

Environment Canada issued a tornado Thursday afternoon in parts of central Alberta.

A critical alert issued by the Alberta Emergency Alert at 2:37 p.m. said an intense rotating thunderstorm that was possibly producing a tornado had been located near Sundre and was almost stopped.

At 2:47 p.m., the alert said the storm was producing a tornado near Shantz, Alta.

People in the area were told to seek refuge immediately.

The tornado warning was left later, but parts of central and southern Alberta remained under surveillance and severe storm warnings.

At around 4.30pm, Environment Canada issued another alert saying its meteorologists were tracking a strong storm 15 kilometers south of Cochrane.

The weather agency noted that conditions were favorable for the development of severe storms that could produce tornadoes, according to the alert. A tornado warning was issued for Rocky View County near Cochrane, Bragg Creek and Tsuut’ina Nation, but was later dropped.

At one point on Thursday afternoon, Calgary was under tornado surveillance.

As of 9 p.m., several areas of central Alberta were under severe storm warnings.

Tornado warnings are issued when storms or tornadoes are likely to occur or are producing tornadoes.
