A train with 243 passengers derails near Kansas City, Missouri

Three people have been killed and at least 50 injured when an Amtrak train carrying 243 people derailed after being hit by a dump truck Monday in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Southwest Chief Train 4 was going from Los Angeles to Chicago when it hit a dump truck. The force of the accident caused the train to derail in the town of Mendon at around 13.42 on Monday, according to Amtrak.

The incident is the second in two days for Amtrak trains. On Sunday, three people died and two more were seriously injured after a train carrying 85 passengers was a vehicle in rural California. All the people who died were inside the vehicle that was hit by the train.

Photos of the remains

Dax McDonald, a software developer who was a passenger on the train, posted these photos from the crash site.

In one of them, a huge pair of wheels on its axle – apparently from the dump truck, as they have tires – is twisted on the tracks.

Another shows passengers and rescuers boarding the side of the train carriages, pulling people out of the doors now pointed upwards along the train.

According to McDonald, the rescued passengers have been sheltered at Northwestern High School, near Mendon.

“Everything happened as a slow motion”

A local ambulance officer has confirmed there are multiple fatalities, according to CNN.

Chariton County Ambulance Service Superintendent Eric McKenzie told reporters there were more than one person dead and at least 50 injured.

Robert Nightingale, a New Mexico passenger who was napping in one of the train’s bed cars, said, “It all happened in slow motion. It started rocking and, and rocking, and then blinking, and “All this dust was passing through my window.”

The window had sunk to the floor, which meant he couldn’t get out that way. Instead, he grabbed his backpack and climbed into the hallway, and finally climbed onto the side of the train, which was now pointing toward the sky.
