Asus ROG Phone 6, 6 Pro Gaming phones bring Samsung OLED to a refresh rate of 165 Hz

Asus on Tuesday unveiled two new gaming phones, the ROG Phone 6 and the ROG Phone 6 Pro, which include the latest Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor and a Samsung AMOLED display capable of operating at a refresh rate of 165 Hz. Next to the phones, the AeroActive Cooling 6 accessory that attaches to the line claims to reduce the temperature by up to 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees F) from the back of the phone while also including touch-button shoulder pads.

Both phones also include a 6,000 mAh battery with 65-watt charge and additional sensors that add game controls through the phone’s gyroscope as well as in the corners of the phone. They also each include a 50-megapixel main camera, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 5-megapixel macro camera. Both phones also include a 12 megapixel front camera.

The main differences between the standard 6 and the 6 Pro come with their storage and memory options: the 6 starts with 256 GB of storage with models that include 8 GB and 12 GB of RAM, while the 6 Pro includes 512 GB of storage and 18 GB of RAM. The Pro also has a second screen on the back that can display notifications, system information, and animations. Instead, the 6 has an LED logo that can be customized to illuminate for different situations.

All of these are specifications that, like other gaming phones, aim to prioritize power and performance to get the most out of Android games. The battery in particular is especially notable and its 6,000mAH capacity matches last year’s Asus ROG Phone 5. This phone has one of the longest batteries we’ve seen in an Android phone, according to CNET reviewer Patrick Holland, and it was achieved using two 3,000 mAh batteries. However, last year’s phone also had a very fast 144 Hz screen, and this year’s even faster 165 Hz screen could affect how quickly it burns with a charge.

Having this 165 Hz screen should also make the animations extremely fluid, especially for games that are able to support this threshold. During my review of RedMagic 7, which also has a refresh rate of 165 Hz, only a few Android games support it right now, as most phones are limited to a refresh rate of 120 Hz. For most people, 120 Hz is soft enough, but for the gaming people this phone is aimed at, 165 Hz brings a little more accuracy to what you can see.

Release dates are not yet available, but the two phones will arrive in Europe for the first time at € 999 (approximately $ 1,024; £ 858; AU $ 1,510) for the € 6 and € 1,299 for the Pro. This puts them well in the flagship territory in terms of prices and an increase over last year’s ROG Phone 5, which started at 799 euros.

While we should expect a practice with the phone to check the Snapdragon chip on the phone, this latest chip along with the higher refresh rate screen on a screen made by Samsung are intriguing as both could eventually. they end up in more conventional phones along the line.
