ICYMI: UK is already in “fifth wave” as experts warn summer events will see infections rise further
The UK is battling a fifth wave of Covid as infections increase and major summer events could see cases increase even further, experts have warned.
Coronavirus cases have risen sharply in recent weeks, with the latest figures showing that 1.7 million people tested positive across the UK, 23% more than the previous week. The increase is being driven by the recent BA.4 and BA.5 variants, subvariants of Omicron.
There are concerns that the return of massive events for the first time since the pandemic, such as Glastonbury on the weekend, the Notting Hill Carnival and the Edinburgh Festival in August, will keep the Covid on the rise.

Pakistan is asking for masks on domestic flights as COVID numbers increase
Pakistan’s aviation regulator has made masks mandatory on domestic flights due to a gradual increase in the number of COVID-19 cases across the country, it said in a statement.
The order comes a day after Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, reported that its positivity ratio for COVID-19, or the positive case rate of all tests performed, rose to 21 percent. compared to a national rate of 2.8 percent.
“With immediate effect, the use of a mask will be mandatory on board domestic flights,” the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) said in a statement on Sunday afternoon.
Pakistan has had very few cases of COVID in recent months and had eliminated almost all precautions.
But over the past 24 hours, COVID’s national positivity ratio had risen to 2.85 percent with 382 positive cases and two deaths, according to data released Monday by Islamabad’s National Institutes of Health.

What is an NHS Covid Pass and when should I use it?
Boris Johnson put an end to the social restrictions of the UK government’s “Plan B” to deal with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus in England on February 24, 2022, apparently drawing a line under the era of the blockade of a once and for all.
How did this affect NHS Covid passers-by? My colleague Joe Sommerlad takes a look:
