Emmy nominations have been announced for 2022 and have brought tears, unusual celebrations and unexpected wishes.
Here’s a look at the main conclusions of the nominations.
Sydney Sweeney’s tearful celebration
The two-time Emmy nominee Sydney Sweeney was unable to fight back tears when she spoke to her mother after the nominations were announced today.
The 24-year-old earned two nominations, Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role in the chaotic Cassie in Euphoria, and Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for Teen Olivia in The White Lotus.
“It’s an honor to know that both Olivia and Cassie have connected with so many. I’m very proud of these two shows and grateful to everyone who has been a part of them,” Sweeney said.
“But most importantly, Mom, I love you. We did it through the ups and downs.”

Sweeney spoke with Variety today and opened his views on the nominations.
“I was cheering for Yellowstone. I have a feeling Yellowstone was turned down,” he said.
A new device to mark the moment
Melanie Lynskey told Variety that she felt “very elegant” after her nomination for the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for Yellowjackets, and that she was going to give it a whim.
When asked how he is celebrating the news, he said he is going to the stores.
“I think we’ll go out and buy a fridge. Very glamorous. I think Best Buy,” Lynskey said.
Veterans of the Oscars rejected Emmys
With Amanda Seyfred, Julia Garner and Lily James for Best Leading Actress in a Limited Series Emmy, this year’s Oscar winner for Best Actress, Jessica Chastain, has been rejected from the category.
Chastain won the Academy Award for her role in The Eyes of Tammy Faye in March, but overlooked this Emmy for her part in Scenes from a Marriage.
But she’s not the only Oscar-winning veteran to miss this year. Here are some of the ones I didn’t look at:
- Julia Roberts, Gaslit
- Renee Zellweger, The Thing About Pam
- Viola Davis, The First Lady
- Anne Hathaway, WeCrashed
Academy members Samuel L Jackson and Jared Leto were also rejected, in the category of best actor in a limited series.

And so … not Emmy
Miranda, Carrie and Charlotte returned to the screens for the restart of Sex and the City.
The follow-up to Sex and the City I Just Like That didn’t get any nominations this year, even though the original show was one of the Emmy Award favorites.
In his career, Sex and the City was nominated for more than 30 Emmys between 1999 and 2004.
Of those nominations, the show won four, including Best Comedy Series in 2001 and Best Direction for a Comedy Series in 2002.
Sarah Jessica Parker won Best Leading Actress in a Comedy Series in 2004 and that same year her co-star Cynthia Nixon won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

A look at Kate Bush
Stranger Things had 13 Emmy nominations this year, including one for Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill song.
The episode Dear Billy, which includes the 1985 hit, is in the best musical oversight.

The song has resurfaced since it was featured in the series, and it even broke some records.
But despite widespread nominations, none of the cast were nominated for performance awards, including Millie Bobby Brown and Sadie Sink.

Bill Hader has four chances at an Emmy
That’s right, and three of them are for a show.
This would be Barry, the show that Bill Hader co-created where he plays assassin Barry Berkman.
He is best lead actor in a comedy series, best screenplay for a comedy series and best direction for a comedy series.
The best guest actor in a comedy series is also in play for Hader, who is nominated for Curb Your Enthusiasm.
But Sarah Goldberg, who plays Sally Reed in Barry, received no encouragement.
Hader is a veteran of the Television Academy Awards, with 24 nominations and three wins on his belt.
The game of squid makes history
The Squid game has signed for a second season.
Squid Game has become the first non-English language series nominated for best drama series.
The show has garnered a total of 14 nominees, with stars Lee Jung-jae, Jung Ho-yeon, Park Hae-soo and Oh Young-soo for the awards.
The show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, said he’s in the grueling process of writing the second season.
“These nominations add to the pressure, but as the pressure increases, I would say it also increases my motivation, because I want to meet expectations,” he said.
A look at our Australian nominations
Murray Bartlett is nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a series limited by his role as Armond in The White Lotus.
This year he has won two more awards for this role, including the Critics ’Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series and the Australian Academy of Film and Television International Award for Best Actor in a Series.
Sarah Snook is also nominated for an award, with a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Shiv in Succession.
There’s also Toni Collette, who is nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Limited Series by The Staircase.
