TOUCH! The Giants take a 17-14 lead into the third quarter.

Half: The Giants went into the half with a 10-7 lead. In relief of Daniel Jones, Tyrod Taylor went 13-for-21 for 129 yards and a 7-yard touchdown pass to Richie James.

First quarter: The Giants trail, 7-3. Daniel Jones is 6 of 10 for 69 yards. Saquon Barkley has four carries for 13 yards and one reception for six yards.

Shane Lemieux (TOE) will not return. We’re told on the air that the Giants were hoping to let Lemieux play some center later.

It doesn’t look like Shane Lemieux has a terrible injury. But, you don’t want any injuries in a game like this.

The New York Giants open their preseason Thursday night (7 p.m. ET/NFL Network and NBC-4), marking the debut of Brian Daboll as the team’s head coach.

Use this post as a discussion thread and to keep up with live updates throughout the game.

Seeing old friends

Daboll’s debut comes against Bill Belichick, a mentor and former businessman, and friend and Giants head coach Joe Judge, whom Daboll replaced. He’s not getting sentimental.

“I haven’t thought about it yet. I am very focused on trying to do things right every day. Obviously it is [Belichick is] a mentor of mine, but I haven’t sat there and said, ‘Oh, this is the first game,'” Daboll said. “I know my wife and kids are going to try to get out there. But what has he coached, 750 games? This is the first pre-season game for me. I’m just trying to do the right thing for my team. I don’t really worry about myself.”

Judge being on the other sideline as New England’s quarterbacks coach and offensive assistant might be a little uncomfortable for some of the guys on the roster who played with him the past two years. Again, not something that worries Daboll.

“I haven’t even dealt with it. You’ve been in this league long enough where I’ve coached against friends, players, coaches. It’s like you get used to it, you know?” Daboll said. “To be in the league as long as I’ve been, I know 10 other guys on this staff, I’ve worked with four of them, or I was in this place last year and I’m going to this place. It’s kind of the nature of the NFL.”

Home vs Backups

Daboll said all healthy Giants starters will play.

“I think this is important to play football: to have live performances. How many repetitions it will be, I can’t tell you right now,” Daboll said. “I think it will be less for some and more for others, and every game will have a plan. I hope all our players play on Thursday.”

That won’t be the case for the Patriots, who aren’t expected to play starters.

QB Mac Jones and most of Patriots starters not expected to play in tonight’s preseason opener, sources and @DanGrazianoESPN tell me.

Joint practices against the Panthers next week, then the Raiders the week after that.
