According to the mayor, the weapon used in deadly shootings was obtained legally

Highland Park signed a city ordinance banning assault weapons in 2013, NBC News said during an interview with the city’s mayor Tuesday morning, forcing host Hoda Kotb to ask, “Do you know any what about where the gun may have come from? “

“I don’t know where the gun came from, but I know it was obtained legally,” Mayor Nancy Rotering said during one of her first interviews since the deadly shooting devastated her small Illinois town.

“At some point, this nation needs to have a conversation about these weekly events involving the killing of dozens of people with legally obtained weapons,” he added. “If that’s what our laws represent, I think we need to look at them.”

“I want us to talk about the fact that there are weapons of war on our streets that people can legally obtain, and then take out dozens of people,” he said. “Our community will never recover from this injury.”

The Chicago mayor is calling for a “federal effort” to remove “weapons of war” from his hands

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot issued a statement after the deadly July 4 shooting that took place 27 miles north of her city over the holiday weekend and called for a “federal effort” to stop the onslaught of mass shootings that continue to affect American communities.

“Armed violence does not respect geographical boundaries or socioeconomic differences,” the mayor began. “Whether it’s the backyards of Englewood, West Garfield Park, Uvalde, Buffalo or now Highland Park, none of us are immune and we’re all vulnerable without a federal effort to get weapons of war out of the hands of civilians.”

The mayor of Chicago has been struggling to contain his city’s growing problem of armed violence and responded last month by raising the 22 to 23-hour curfew law for youth under 18 instead of 17.

This attempt to curb the rise in juvenile armed violence was accompanied by a weekend ban on unaccompanied minors at Millennium Park from 6pm every Thursday and continuing until Sunday.
