In our garage with Ian Jefferyes’ 1937 Chevrolet

Tell us about your car?

The vehicle is a 1937 Chevrolet Standard Sedan.

I have had it close to me for ten years now.

It was a family heirloom, my cousin had it for the previous 30 years, had no interest in doing anything about it and said “if you’re interested in this kind of thing, you can have it and restore it too.”

So we put it all back together.

What modifications have you made?

It was in surprisingly good condition.

It had been stored dry in a shed for a few years. So the bodywork was good, no rust.

Some rats had lived there, but they hadn’t chewed the tapestry because it had been done back in the 1970s on vinyl.

But they made a mess of the carpets and the lining of the hood, so it had to be replaced.

We have rebuilt the engine. I needed him to have obviously sat down at some point and had some water.

So we took it all out and the gearbox, the differential was fine. All the brakes were removed by all the new brake lines.

Because the rats had damaged it and the new wiring loom also because they had chewed it well.

It took us about three and a half years from the ai until we got it up and running.

What makes it so unique?

It’s a car you have to drive. There is no electrical help at all.

It’s a six-cylinder, but three-speed on the ground, drum brakes around, at least hydraulic, not mechanical, which is a bit of a help.

But no power steering, no electric brakes, no radio, no air conditioning.

You know, to get some fresh air, you just have to open the rear ventilation in front of the windshield and it’s at full speed or nothing.

Appreciate what the modern car is when you drive one of these because you have to drive it all the way.

What do you like about your car?

While it’s hard work, it’s a pleasure to drive the thing and it draws attention like you wouldn’t believe.

I’ve had girls kissing me and all sorts of things that you wouldn’t normally get in a normal car.

I think it’s the car, not me. I’m sure it is.

But yes, it’s really an adventure.
