Sir Bob Neill, the Conservative chairman of the Select Justice Committee, has said the leadership contest should be “truncated” to allow Boris Johnson’s replacement to be selected quickly.
He also said Dominic Raab should be appointed interim prime minister.
Speaking to Sky News, Sir Bob said: “I think the solution would be twofold: first, that the chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady, should meet urgently with the Conservative Party board, this is and agree on a truncated timetable for the leadership elections, in order to deal with our end of the deputies process, reducing it to two next week and then I should go straight to the party and we should look that this is not resolved October, I think we should do it in the summer.
“Today most people are by email, we can do it quite easily and what I think we should do during the interim is that I think the prime minister should go and even though you can’t having a prime minister in office, you can name Dominic Raab, is the current deputy prime minister and he has said he will not be a candidate in a leadership contest.
“You could appoint him as prime minister to serve, knowing he would do so during this interim period.”
