Live Tory leadership: Rishi Sunak warns Liz Truss tax cuts on their own ‘not very good’

Liz Truss’s planned tax cuts on their own are “not very good”, Rishi Sunak has warned, as he said the party risked electoral oblivion in 2024 without direct support.

At tonight’s fifth Tory leadership call in Darlington, Sunak has suggested he would invest tens of billions to tackle the cost of living crisis, while Mrs Truss is yet to decide whether to provide some direct payment to the British.

“The only way to help [people] it’s directly supported,” insisted the former chancellor. “As tax cuts alone aren’t very good if you’re a pensioner if you’re not earning extra money, they’re not very good if you’re working hard on the National Living Wage because Liz’s tax cut is worth around a pound a week to that person. Zero value for a pensioner. This is not right.

Without more support, he warned, “not only will millions of people suffer, we will be absolutely hammered when it comes to an election. The British people will not forgive us for not doing this.”

In her own interview with TalkTV’s Tom Newton Dunn, Ms Truss replied: “I believe in Tory economics, I believe in a growing economy and a growing economy actually brings more growth in the future.

“We’re facing huge energy difficulties now and I understand people are struggling with their fuel and food bills. But the first thing we should do as Conservatives is help people have more of their own money. What we don’t I support is taking people’s money in taxes and then giving it back in handouts. That to me is Gordon Brown economics.”
