San Francisco: A million people eager to get introduced to a new artificial intelligence tool that allows them to create images simply by describing them in words will soon achieve their desire, its creators said Wednesday.
Artificial intelligence research firm OpenAI is conducting a large-scale beta test of DALL-E, cutting-edge software that creates images from textual descriptions.
While the advent of AI has sparked fears that humans will be replaced by machines in fields from customer service to journalism, enthusiasts see technology more as an opportunity than a threat.
A video showing the tool on the company’s website showed DALL-E generating an image of a polar bear playing a guitar, a photo of a koala dipping a basketball and the famous painting of the Mona Lisa, but with the theme with a mohawk hair style.
“We’ve already seen people use DALL · E to make music videos for young cancer patients, create magazine covers and bring new concepts to life,” the company said in a post.

AFPOpenAI said that in the coming weeks invitations will be sent to a million people on the waiting list to try the latest version of the tool.
Amid concerns that this and similar tools could be misused in disinformation campaigns, OpenAI said it worked with researchers and developers to create safeguards to curb abuses like the DALL-E used to to deception.
“We reject image uploads that contain realistic faces and attempts to create the likeness of public figures, including celebrities and prominent political figures,” Open AI said.
DALL-E-integrated AFPFilters block violent, political, sexual, or other content prohibited by their policies, and the system is designed to avoid assumptions about race or gender, Open AI said.
