Labuschagne charges the hosts

Labuschagne makes the most of his life by rubbing salt on Sri Lanka’s wound with a beautiful cover for Rajitha that moves away to the limit. It’s a short, wide delivery, and Labuschagne pours in.

And a few balls later, Labuschagne did another very well, sending Rajitha for another four ahead of the point.

The No.3 Aussie moves to 37 with its third and fourth limits.

Labuschagne has a life

Sri Lanka is a golden opportunity.

Mendis should have had Labuschagne bewildered by Dickwella on the 28th, but Dickwella can’t catch the ball!

Mendis advanced Labuschagne brilliantly, was out of his fold for an absolute mile, but lives to fight another day after a careless vigil just 15 minutes before lunch.

Khawaja has left

You have it! Mendis Khawaja bowls with an absolute ripper!

Just when Khawaja was meant for a big entry, Mendis sends one straightening the line, turns slightly, Khawaja misses it and cuts the stump.

Sensational delivery. Khawaja leaves for 37 and Smith is the new hitter.

Tourists are 2-70 with less than half an hour before lunch.

Usman, Marnus raises a union of 50 people

Opportunely, Khawaja raises the association of 50 runs with four others, courtesy of a nice shot from a short delivery by Mendis.

Khawaja goes to 37, while Labuschagne is to 24.

Labuschagne explodes

Labuschagne breaks the shackles and breaks two Jayasuriya boundaries into three balls with a pair of blunt sweeps down the side of his leg.

He didn’t hit the rope in his first 33 balls, but the No. 3 Australian now has his eye inside and goes 24 without coming out.

This partnership is starting to build very well, and is now worth 49 runs.

Jayasuriya provoked

Another debutant, and another spinner, Prabath Jayasuriya enters the attack, replacing Maheesh Theekshana (0-8).

The Australians have 1-50 after 16 overs. Khawaja (31) and Labuschagne (12) are the batsmen who have not come out.

Australia makes ‘thirst’ start

asked Theekshana

Out-of-spinner debutant Maheesh Theekshana has replaced Kasun Rajitha (1-12) in Sri Lanka’s bowling attack. This is only Theekshana’s fourth first-class match.

Khawaja looks solid as a rock

Khawaja has been by far the most comfortable hitter so far on the first morning.

Races have come relatively easily for the first player, and after 11 overs, he is 25 of 44 balls, including three limits.

Labuschagne (3 of 10) continues to regain his feet after Warner’s dismissal in the fifth final.

Another four for Khawaja

Khawaja tickles Mendis brilliantly up to a thin leg during his third four in the morning, and goes to 17.
