Melbourne’s “beautiful” Gertrude Street came second. If you haven’t been, it’s a vibrant area of Fitzroy filled with a “wealth of independent retail, drinking and dining venues”.

Time Out’s The list aims to “shine a spotlight on some of the most culturally vibrant and dynamic microcosms of the world’s cities”.

Here are the top five.

1. Rue Wellington, Montreal, Canada

The Time Out The team noted that this street is “bookended by one of the best bars and one of the best new restaurants in town.”

There’s no questioning its cool factor, the team said, “especially when the city in question is one of the foodie capitals of the world.”

Montreal’s picturesque southwest strip is home to nearly 200 businesses, including a new local bagel shop. Come summer, the promenade becomes pedestrian-only, with a free tuk-tuk service to take you from one end to the other.

It’s known for its cocktail bars, brunch spots and epic sandwiches, they say Time Out.

2. Gertrude Street, Melbourne, Australia

It’s a strip where you’ll find bars, restaurants, galleries, boutiques, vintage goods, costume hire and old-school pubs.

Time Out described it as “beautiful, unassuming and devoid of the riotous nightlife of its relatively rowdy siblings”.

The strip has steadily added a wealth of independent retail, drinking and dining venues to its cultural portfolio, and despite its proximity to the city centre, this 850m stretch feels impossibly leafy, slow and quiet, reportedly . Time Out.

3. Great Western Road, Glasgow, Scotland

Glasgow’s historic west approach road comes third on the list of ‘coolest’ streets.

It runs from the Botanic Gardens to St George’s Cross and the strip is buzzing from morning to night with everything from milk-guzzling parents to students and hipsters. Time Out say the crew.

There’s a little bit of everything from “cheap Neapolitan pizzas and beer schooners at Paesano to second-hand shopping at Glasgow Vintage Co, West and DUDS; the Inn Deep brews riverside craft beer to sweaty basement gigs at the Hug and Pint; late night pours at Oran Mor for hangover coffees and breakfast burritos at Papercup”.

4. Yongkang Street, Taipei, Taiwan

In fourth place is Yongkang Street, a quiet street in the Dongmen district, full of excellent restaurants and hole-in-the-walls where you can find traditional fried snacks.

“Gastronomic reputation aside, Yongkang has abandoned the absurdity of chain stores for an individualized atmosphere with an artisanal edge: witness its local carpenter, traditional pharmacy and jewelry workshops.” Time Out he says

5. Værnedamsvej, Copenhagen, Denmark

If you’ve been to Værnedamsvej in Copenhagen’s Vesterbro district, you would have noticed people of all ages. But according to Time Outin recent years it has somehow avoided the gentrification and tourism of ultra-regarded Nørrebro, making it even more of a draw.

“With its fresh flowers, cute shops, wine bars, cheese shops and even a French lycée [school]it’s a kind of mini-Paris in the Danish capital,” Time Out he says
