IT infrastructure provider SoftIron has opened what it says is Australia’s first component-level IT infrastructure manufacturing facility, located in Botany.
The facility produces components for SoftIron’s HyperCloud intelligent cloud fabric and was supported by a Department of Defense innovation grant under the Sovereign Industrial Capability program.
One of SoftIron’s selling points is that it manages IT security risks by manufacturing and assembling all of its own equipment and offering its customers a unique security vetting process.
The company says all of this eliminates the risk of malicious state actors introducing firmware implants or backdoors into critical information systems.
The facility was officially opened today by Assistant Minister for Defense (and local member) Matt Thistlethwaite, at a ceremony attended by federal and state government representatives, SoftIron’s leadership team and industry VIPs. defence, business and IT.
SoftIron COO Jason Van der Schyff said recent events had made it clear that onshoring or “friend-shoring” ICT supply chains was the only safe way for Australian IT providers to manage its commercial and strategic risk.
“Recent geopolitical events and the deterioration of the strategic environment have exposed major weaknesses in global supply chains, particularly in the area of critical technology.
“Apart from exposing Australian businesses to unacceptable business risk, our reliance on foreign-manufactured components has increased the risk of malicious state actors introducing covert hardware or firmware during the manufacturing process.
“Unlike manufacturers who rely on opaque supply chains for their components, SoftIron offers full transparency of the design and manufacturing of hardware and software supply chains in its HyperCloud IT infrastructure.”
UK-based SoftIron established its wholly-owned Australian subsidiary in 2020. Its ‘safe provenance’ process means selected customers can audit products end-to-end to ensure they are delivered exactly as designed and specified, making HyperCloud suitable for particularly concerned organizations. on the protection of sensitive data.
Australian customers and partners include Baidam Solutions, Deep Recognition, JEM Computer Systems, NCI Australia, Real World Technologies and Servers Australia.
“We’re seeing other Western nations like the United States move toward supply chain security in the area of critical technology with initiatives like the CHIP Act,” Van der Schyff said. “SoftIron is ahead of the curve here in Australia by identifying the looming challenge and putting capabilities in place to meet it.”
ENABLE HYBRID CLOUD AND REDUCE NETWORK LATENCY
Hybrid cloud promises to bring together the best of both worlds, allowing businesses to combine the scalability and cost-effectiveness of the cloud with the performance and control you can get from your on-premises infrastructure.
Reducing WAN latency is one of the biggest concerns with hybrid cloud performance. Leveraging data compression and deduplication can reduce network latency.
Research firm Markets and Markets predicted that the size of the hybrid cloud market is expected to grow from $38.27 billion in 2017 to $97.64 billion by 2023.
Colocation facilities offer many of the benefits of having your servers in the cloud while maintaining physical control of your systems.
The cloud adjacency provided by colocation facilities can allow you to take advantage of their low-latency, high-bandwidth connections to the cloud, as well as provide a robust connection to your on-premises corporate network.
