Oscar winner Sean Penn ignited a game of “wait, is that him?” on Saturday night, as the seedy Sydney pub the A-lister has been secretly frequenting was rented out for a Halloween party full of actors in DIY costumes.
The Fast times at Ridgemont High The star has kept a low profile since entering the country to film the six-part dark comedy series C*A*U*G*H*T but has been seen at the Glenroy Hotel in the Sydney suburb of Alexandria.
“He likes to have a drink and relax and have a night at the pub,” a local said of the Hollywood star and his quirky drinking spot, which sits on a busy road in front of a McDonald’s, surrounded by of offices and industrial. buildings
“There’s an indoor outdoor area in the pub where they have trivia and he reserved that area for a Halloween party.”
Penn plays a fictional version of himself C*A*U*G*H*T, a satire about four Australian soldiers sent on a secret mission to a war-torn country. But this party would allow him to fall into the shadows as someone completely different.
It was the perfect plan. Penn is unrecognizable at the best of times. Halloween costumes would mean the star and his cast, including former teenage heartthrob Matthew Fox from the 90s TV series Feast of the Five and Aussie actors Kick Gurry, Bryan Brown, Erik Thomson, Rebecca Breeds and Bella Heathcote could party in peace on the spookiest night of the year.
What would Penn dress up as? Maybe a sexy kitten. Or a zombie cheerleader. Maybe he’d take a dig at his ex-wife Madonna and wear a cone bra.
The man is a legend of stage and screen. A master of transformation. If anyone can go unnoticed while wearing a DIY costume made from crap found in an Airbnb junk closet, it’s Sean Penn.
As the sun set at 7pm, a Steve Irwin, a Hunter S Thompson and a Sailor Moon walked into the pub. Then a Spider-Man.
The addams family the theme song played sporadically over the poky bar speakers throughout the night as the cast and production crew partied while sipping a myriad of mojitos and other cocktails in the separate area.
But it seems Sean wasn’t spending the night as Sailor Moon in disguise, and had instead left the country before he could attend the Halloween party at his new favorite spot.
In a rousing speech, one of the producers said yes C*A*U*G*H*T’s creator, director and star Kick Gurry who convinced the A-lister to sign on to Stan’s original series.
“There was a reason why Sean Penn came to Australia to do an Australian TV show,” they said.
“And that reason was that he wanted to be around the positivity of this particular person. He believed that the world needed the positivity that this man had. And Sean wanted to put that positivity on a pedestal for the whole world to see.
“F**k Sean Penn!” shouted someone from the crowd.
“No, we love Sean!” another blow back.
Did the Hollywood heavyweight at least cover the bill?
At the end of the night, Steve Irwin and the rest of the team were seen deliberating over the bar tab.
