Fremantle took care of business in their quest for a top four spot, but not without a huge scare against GWS at Manuka Oval.
The win means the Dockers will finish third on the ladder on Saturday and cling to a double chance if Collingwood lose to Carlton or Sydney go down to St Kilda on Sunday.
If they both win, the Dockers will host an elimination final at Perth Stadium against the top eight.
But it wasn’t easy in Canberra, with the Dockers 31 points ahead as the Giants dominated early.
They made it five goals in a row either side of half-time to hit the front early in the second half and looked home in the last when Andrew Brayshaw hit his second major, only for two quick-fire efforts from Jacob Hopper to turn the tide the match.
But the Dockers had the final say, with the last three goals of the day kicked by Michael Walters who made his third major in his 200th AFL game.
Midfielder Will Brodie led the charge with a stellar 30-disposal and one-goal game, but he can thank his influential teammate Caleb Serong for establishing control in the middle with 11 disposals.
The Dockers had been forced to play star midfielder Nat Fyfe out of goal after Griffin Logue’s late injury withdrawal saw him join key forwards Rory Lobb and Matt Taberner in missing the game.
It meant they struggled to score at times despite dominating the interior with 50 counts 68-45, with GWS defender Sam Taylor a beneficiary with an impressive 20 touches and 12 marks.
He ends Mark McVeigh’s tenure as interim GWS coach with a 4-9 win-loss record, although the team’s increased performance level in the back half of the season has made him into a true candidate for the permanent position.
The Giants finish their campaign with a 6-16 record and face an offseason full of movement as they look to name a new coach and deal with a number of players rumored to want to leave the club.
The suns hammer the kangaroos

Gold Coast were left to ponder what might have been after an even club win against wooden spooners North Melbourne at Docklands.
It was the Suns’ 10th win, equaling their 2014 season best, but again they did not finish in the top eight to play in the finals.
Gold Coast set up the 16.18 (114) to 6.11 (47) victory with superior efficiency with the ball, control over the stops and a functioning forward line led by veteran Alex Sexton with a career-best six goals.
It was a disappointing collective assessment of the Kangaroos players for new senior coach Alastair Clarkson as he watched the game away from Docklands.
Clarkson, at least, would have been buoyed by several individual performances, like number one draft pick Jason Horne-Francis with his work in the middle of the field until he was forced with a head cut late in the third quarter.
Backman Ben McKay kept key Suns forward Levi Casboult scoreless and Curtis Taylor collected 25 possessions and a goal as he snuffed out the influence of Suns co-captain Touk Miller, a Brownlow Medal favourite, to 25 manageable
North Melbourne really only threatened once with goals from Hugh Greenwood and Luke Davies-Uniacke early in the third quarter.
But the Suns responded to the challenge with five unanswered goals from Sexton (two), Miller, Malcolm Rosas and Mabior Chol to put the contest out of reach.
