WEDNESDAY UPDATE:, Update what’s new… James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has officially crossed the $1 billion global mark. As we wrote yesterday (see below), the 20th Century Studios/Disney sequel hit the milestone with Tuesday’s earnings. This benchmark was achieved in just 14 days of worldwide release.
Way of Water now has bragging rights for being the fastest to $1 billion since Spider-Man: No Way Home and the fastest to the mark in 2022. It’s also become just the sixth film which has crossed $1 billion in its first two weeks of release, and the fourth Disney release to do so.
Tuesday gave the Na’vi $50.8 million from offshore markets and $23.8 million domestically.

EARLIER, TUESDAY: James Cameron’s Avatar: The Last Airbender is nearing the $1 billion global box office mark, having easily topped $900 million worldwide through its second Monday . This is the latest benchmark for the highly anticipated sequel and comes just 13 days after the global rollout began. With $955.1 million through Monday, The Way of Water has become the third-highest-grossing film of 2022 and the fourth-highest-grossing film of the pandemic era. It is also expected to reach the $1 billion mark worldwide with today’s participation.
Through Monday, the division is at $293.2 million domestically and $661.9 million at the international box office. Internationally, Way of Water is now the second release of 2022 and the #3 studio title of the pandemic era.
Last week was very strong last week and the sci-fi epic continues that trend this week with the holidays in full swing and plenty of holiday distractions in the rear view. France and Italy, for example, saw their best days of play on Monday this week since the film’s release.
Monday’s total shipping was $52.2 million, domestic was $31.5 million.
The top 5 foreign markets through Monday are China ($104.5 million), France ($60.5 million), Korea ($55.4 million), Germany ($41.5 million) and the ‘India ($39.2 million).
On Tuesday, and not included in previous totals, the 20th Century Studios/Disney sci-fi epic rose to $108.7 million in China according to local estimates. Ticketing service Maoyan has raised its projections again, with a final of $170 million. In Korea, local estimates bring the cume through Tuesday to $58.2 million.
