Minute 22: Messi almost has another one!
The Argentina star looked to have a clean break for his second goal of the game, but he was just barely ruled offside. The sentence was confirmed by the VAR.
Minute 27: Another near miss
Argentina were left searching for their second goal after Lautaro MartÃnez’s goal was also ruled offside.
Minute 35: Offside AGAIN
Argentina found the back of the net four times in the first half, but Messi’s 10th-minute penalty remained the only real score thanks to three goals ruled out for offside.
According to OptaAnalyst, Argentina have already been offside seven times in this game. The last team to have more in a World Cup match was the Netherlands against Costa Rica in 2014 with 13 offside calls.

Saudi Arabia captain Salman Al Faraj went down with an apparent injury shortly before the end of the first half. With the Saudis already under pressure thanks to Messi’s opener, it could be a huge blow to the underdogs’ chances of pulling off an upset.

Argentina were still looking to equalize and avoid a catastrophic upset, but Messi’s free-kick went over the crossbar and his header two minutes later was saved by Al-Owais.
