Vaccinations for younger children before the school year will be “a double bonus”, says Dr Kerry Beal.

Some Hamilton parents are feeling an air of relief after being able to vaccinate their children against COVID-19.

Children between the ages of six months and five years, the last group to qualify for vaccines in the province, became eligible to receive their first doses on July 28.

“These are all parents who have been waiting desperately to vaccinate their children,” Dr. Kerry Beal, who began administering vaccines to children in this age group, told The Spectator.

But not all parents feel comfortable taking their babies and toddlers to vaccination centers because of the fear of exposure.

That’s why Beal, who works as a senior physician at Shelter Health Network, and Dr. Joe Oliver have started organizing outdoor clinics for children under five, offering them vaccinations in open spaces.

The highly contagious BA.5 subvariant of Omicron has become increasingly widespread in Hamilton during the seventh wave.

So the last availability of vaccines for younger children before the school year will be “a double bonus,” Beal said.

In his view, parents could feel more comfortable with their children and, hopefully, the chances of infection in schools will also be reduced.

Between July 28 and August 2, over the long weekend, about 250 children aged six months to under five years old received their first doses at vaccination centers in Hamilton, the city said. There are at least 27,000 children in this age group who are eligible for COVID-19 vaccinations in Hamilton.

The city currently offers about 550 weekly appointments for children aged six months to under five, but only 40 appointments were available at Hamilton Public Health-run clinics from July 28 to August 1. since they were closed from Saturday to Monday.

About 900 appointments were made for children age five and under at public health-run clinics between July 28 and Aug. 16, the city said. This does not include local pharmacies or primary care providers who provide vaccines.

Beal noted that she and Oliver have vaccinated 10 to 11 children daily since Thursday. He said he expects to see a lot of activity “for the first little bit until they get the second dose.” To make an appointment, send Oliver a direct message on Twitter at @joeolivermd.
