Chinese President Xi Jinping has said he is ready to have a “frank and deep” conversation with his US counterpart Joe Biden during their first face-to-face meeting in more than a decade.

The world’s two most powerful leaders smiled and shook hands in front of a row of Chinese and American flags at a luxury hotel on Bali’s Nusa Dua Bay.

Xi said the leaders should “walk the right path” and find the right direction for bilateral ties and “elevate their relationship.”

The two presidents will discuss issues ranging from Beijing’s stance on Taiwan to Russia’s war on Ukraine. “We spent a lot of time together back in the day when we were both vice presidents and it’s great to see you,” Biden told Xi as he put an arm around him.

“As leaders of our two nations, we share the responsibility, in my view, to show that China and the United States can manage our differences, prevent competition … from turning into conflict, and find ways to work together on pressing global issues that require our mutual cooperation,” he said.

The G20 summit itself will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Britain and the EU are asking allies to discredit Russia, reports say

The EU and Britain are reportedly planning to snub Russian Sergei Lavrov at the G20 summit by staging walkouts and are encouraging their allies to follow suit.

The Telegraph quoted EU officials as saying they would do “everything possible” to isolate Russia at the Bali summit.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has decided to skip the meeting and is sending his foreign minister to avoid world leaders critical of his nine-month war in Ukraine.

“We try to work with partners to show very, very, very strongly what the international community thinks about all these crimes, atrocities and illegal actions by Russia,” an EU foreign affairs spokesman told the British newspaper.

“That also means discouraging them from meeting Lavrov or meeting with whoever is leading the Russian delegation or for people to come out when Russia has the floor.”

The spokesman added: “The UK is not keen to co-ordinate with the EU on foreign policy generally, but on this issue we have the same goal and we reinforce each other’s efforts.”
