Global Aussie-born pop star revealed in The Masked Singer

WARNING: Masked Singer spoilers below.

This season’s Masked Singer revelations continued during Sunday night’s episode, with the Popcorn revealed to be Australian singer Sam Sparro.

Sydney-born, US-based Sparro, 39, rose to fame in 2008 with the electro-soul anthem Black and goldwhich was a top five hit both here and in the UK.

Before his identity was revealed, Popcorn did an awesome version of Somewhere on the arch of Saint Martin, accompanied by another package of clues that had all the signs pointing to Sparro. There were references to Elton John (who bought a portrait of Sparro in 2012) and Star Trek (Sparro’s father composed music for the classic show.) There was mention voodoo – a song he wrote for Adam Lambert – and making a Return to Paradise (the name of his second album).

And he was finally chosen by at least one of the judges, with Mel B correctly guessing Sparro.

Elsewhere on Sunday’s episode, Mirrorball performed Dua Lipa’s hit levitating – and judge Mel B moved closer to who fans have been rooting for in Mirrorball since before the season, former Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton, by guessing her former PCD bandmate Nicole Scherzinger.

The Blowfly sang a Kid Laroi song, still sounding as much like Shannon Noll as he did in Episode 1, and the Snapdragon (who I’m still pretty sure is Sheldon Riley) blasted through the London Grammar hit . strong.

Then it was the turn of wildcard contestant Microphone, who had been pegged as Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams after her debut on the show last week. A few notes on this week’s performance, and I’m more confident than ever (plus there were several Destiny’s Child references in their track pack).

Then there was the rooster, who puzzled me in the first few episodes, but is now definitely establishing himself as Hugh Sheridan. Particularly after this track pack: There were references to Liza Minnelli: Sheridan once served as a support act; and Nepal: Hugh went to Nepal to find a brother after a 2015 earthquake.

In the meantime, masked singer judge Abbie Chatfield let slip an interesting backstage pinch during an appearance on the Ten comedy show The cheap seats last week.

The star confessed that her height-based guesses during the show had been a little too sensible and had been warned by producers that she was ‘ruining the fantasy’ of some of her judges’ more extravagant choices.

“They told me I was obsessed with height and to stop obsessing with heights, because I was ruining the fantasy and it could be someone else,” she told the hosts.

“But I was like, I know Osher’s height [Günsberg] is, and I’ll work back from there, and I was usually right.”

Maybe, but it’s been judge Chrissie Swan who’s been on one masked singer Recent winning streak, with fellow newbie judge correctly guessing the final three contestants to be revealed: Jamie Durie, Emma Watkins and Matt Preston.

We also guessed who each contestant was earlier in the season; watch as we stack up as each celebrity is revealed.

The popcorn unmasking leaves five contestants still in the game this season, including newly introduced “wild card” player Microphone, who is widely tipped to be Destiny’s Child superstar Michelle Williams.

The Masked Singer continues Monday at 7:30 p.m.
