One in 10 UK voters have a favorable opinion of Liz Truss after about six weeks as Prime Minister, making her the most unpopular leader “by some distance” according to YouGov.
The poll, which asked 1,724 British adults from October 14 to 16, showed the figure had fallen from 15 percent a week ago.
In a separate YouGov poll, conducted over the past two days among 530 Conservative party members, 55% say Truss should resign. A third would like former Prime Minister Boris Johnson to take over, while 23% prefer Rishi Sunak.
The popularity of Truss, who became prime minister at the beginning of September, has been falling after a package of tax cuts, most of which were rolled out this week.
“Truss is now by some distance the most unpopular leader we’ve followed,” Patrick English, associate director of YouGov’s political and social research team, said in a tweet.
Four in five British adults view Truss unfavorably, while 62% consider her “very unfavourable”. Twenty percent of Conservative voters in 2019 hold a favorable view of her.
Truss has a net favorability rating of minus 70, a drop of 14 percentage points since last week, the YouGov poll said on Tuesday.
Truss sacked Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng on Friday and replaced him with Jeremy Hunt, who on Monday ditched most of his predecessor’s tax package announced on 23 September.
Truss is more unpopular than Johnson, his predecessor who resigned after a series of scandals, and his rivals for the Tory leadership, according to the YouGov poll.
Penny Mordaunt, the leader of the House of Commons who replaced Truss in the House of Commons on Monday, ranked highest among leading Tory figures with an approval rating of minus 17. Hunt has an approval rating of minus 41 .
