Live Queen’s last funeral: Queue cut by a third as new Met police chief greets mourners in line

Waiting times rose to more than 24 hours overnight as thousands of mourners braved the cold temperatures to catch a glimpse of the Queen in state.

At 5.30am on Saturday, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport’s online tracker said waiting times were expected to be at least 24 hours as people queued from Southwark Park in the south-east from London, about five miles distant.

The government website says: “The accessible queue is on pause and will resume at midday on 17 September.

“All entry slots until 12:00 on 17 September have been filled. More will become available at 12:00 on 17 September. Please do not attempt to join the accessible queue before this time.”

Mourners already queuing were urged to brace for the cold as temperatures dropped below 10C in the early hours of the morning.

Undeterred, a steady stream of people joined the queue Friday evening, many in coats and sweaters.
