Antonio Conte: “I think in the game, United deserved to win,” the Tottenham manager told Amazon Prime. “They played a very good game. On our side, I think the level has to be higher, we have to improve a lot and try to be better than today.

“The first goal was a deflection, but in the end I have to be honest and tell you that United played better than us. They created more chances than us. On the field of play we show will, but we have to show this level that we have to try to improve and be better. The level was high and United showed today that they are much better than us today.

“I consider United to be a very good team and you know very well what they did in the transfer market and what they can spend. You are talking about two different levels. In this kind of game we can do better. We fight against Chelsea and Arsenal and today.

“We have to try to improve and there is only work to do. I repeat, especially in these types of matches where the atmosphere is very noisy, United are an important team, we can improve and raise our level”.

Bruno Fernandes speaks: “Everyone is very happy, it was a great performance and a perfect performance,” says the United captain in an interview with the BBC. “We have to move on, understand that it’s a win or lose process and we have to stay focused and continue.

“We made a lot of good performances, against Newcastle we made a very good performance, we controlled the game and we didn’t get the result. Today was overall the best performance because we got the result and the performance. We need more of this.

“We know the quality we have up front, we know we can be dangerous, so if we have chances to shoot we have to have the belief that we can score. Marcus Rashford didn’t score today, but he did so much, Jadon Sancho too and he took part in Fred’s goal”.

“I’ve seen him [leaving], I didn’t talk to him. I’ll deal with that tomorrow. I enjoyed the performance today. I liked this performance, we are celebrating this win and now we have to recover and we have a big game against Chelsea, the [PL] it’s so exciting”

Erik Ten Hag speaks: Asked about unused sub Cristiano Ronaldo’s very public decision to head down the tunnel to the dressing room with several minutes left in the game, the Manchester United manager says: “I saw it. I didn’t speak with him later. I’ll deal with that tomorrow.”

Match report: Manchester United 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Premier League: Manchester United dominated their narrow visitors throughout and took the points thanks to goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes. Jamie Jackson reports from Old Trafford…

Full time: Manchester United 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Pee! Pee! Peeeeeeeeeeeep! Manchester United won an engrossing but largely one-sided game in full time, making what was probably their best change under Erik Ten Hag to see what happened to a Spurs team’s challenge who looked second best all night. Fred and Bruno Fernades got the goals but it is suspected that it will be unused substitute Cristiano Ronaldo who grabs the headlines after leaving the arena before the final whistle.

90+4 min: Spurs win a late corner, Lisandro Martinez clearing the ball offside under pressure from Harry Kane. Nothing comes out of the set ball and the final whistle is blown.

90+2 min: Djed Spence is stripped by Fred in the Manchester United penalty area and the midfielder wanders upfield with the ball at his feet.

89 min: The camera cuts to Cristiano Ronaldo, who leaves the tunnel for an early shower.

88 min: Double substitution for Manchester United: Oliver Skipp and Djed Spence replace Ivan Perisic and Rodrigo Bentancur.

87 min: Manchester United double substitution: Anthony Elanga and Christian Eriksen replace Casemiro and Jadon Sancho.

85 min: Raphael Varane pokes the ball down the z-row, takes a header off Moura as the substitute advances into the United penalty area. He accidentally catches Moura with his arm and handcuffs her to the side of the head.

82 min: Having seen his side create absolutely nothing in this second half while looking utterly bereft of ideas, Antonio Conte finally makes the changes with less than 10 minutes remaining. Davinson Sanchez, Ryan Sessegnon and Lucas Moura replace Yves Bissouma, Eric Dier and Matt Doherty.

80 min: Brunbo Fernandes is played in behind with a pass from Rashford, wanders forward, takes the ball around Lloris and into the empty net from 15 yards. Offside but not by much.

76 min: Marcus Rashford takes on a challenge, gets upfield and plays the ball inside. It is intercepted.

75 min: Manchester United change: Scott McTominay comes on for Antony.

74 min: It seems puzzling that Antonio Conte hasn’t made a substitution yet. Hugo Lloris makes his eighth save of the game, with a powerful left-hander after a Marcus Rashford scraper. The United striker can’t believe his shot was kept wide.

71 min: The very definition of end-to-end stuff there as Tottenham Hotspur come within a hair of an equalizer only to concede at the other end just seconds later. In an offside position, Harry Kane curled a volley into De Gea’s chest from a tight angle. The flag went up but Hooper stirred the game and Fernandes took full advantage.

GOAL! Manchester United – Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 (Fernandes 69)

United stretch their lead! Referee Simon Hooper raised an offside flag after Harry Kane had a shot blocked by David De Gea as Manchester United broke down the field. It’s a great advantage to play as the play ends with Bruno Fernandes firing a fine shot inside the right to put his side 2-0 up.

66 min: David De Gea sends Marcus Rashford on his way with a long ball from the back. The United striker is unable to control the ball to get a shot away from a tight angle and eventually sends it wide.

61 min: Tottenham’s players continue to chase shadows, unable to get a moment to settle on the ball whenever it occurs to them. An example: Antony wins a corner for his side seconds after Hojbjerg had lost the ball to Raphael Varane. Nothing comes of it.

58 min: United fans serenade Diogo Dalot from the stands as he and his team-mates continue to pile on the damage on Tottenham. They only have one goal but have been completely dominant for nearly an hour.

56 min: The Stretford End holders appeal for a penalty after Marcus Rashford goes down under a challenge from Eric Dier after being played in behind by Bruno Fernandes. There is no release in sight and it seems like a good decision.

53 min: Antony curls a low, left-footed ball just wide from the right after good work from Bruno Fernades, who advanced from midfield before picking out the Brazilian.

50 min: Harry Kane has a shot from distance deflected for a corner. Nothing comes from the set piece.

48 min: Hugo Lloris saves brilliantly from Marcus Rashford, keeping out the United striker’s shot from seven yards with a strong left hand.

GOAL! Manchester Unitec – Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 (Fred 47)

united leader! Jadon Sanchez gets to Fred on the edge of the penalty area and his low drive deflects off Ben Davies and into the bottom left corner past the hopelessly misplaced Hugo Lloris.

Second half: Manchester United 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur

46 min: Manchester United kick off with no changes to either side after the break.

Middle: Manchester United 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Pee! At the end of a first half in which Manchester United were far and away the better team, the tie remains intact. Spurs have been stubborn in defence, while their goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has been kept busy. They’re hanging in there…but just.

45+2 min: Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg can’t keep the ball in play on the touchline after receiving a pass at the feet of Ivan Perisic.

44 min: Harry Kane has a shot at the near post saved by David De Gea. His follow up hits Dalot in the face and the winger goes to the ground. Play continues, much to the chagrin of the Manchester United players, who point to referee Simon Hooper who stopped play immediately when the same thing happened to Eric Dier. They are right.

41 min: Tottenham continue to be on the back foot, struggling to get the ball out of their own half as United come at them in waves. With a better finish, the home team could be three or four goals ahead.

38 min: There’s a break in play as Eric Dier receives treatment after sending Dalot’s shot full force into the face. Moments earlier, Fred had sent a shot from distance sailing high and wide of the Tottenham goal.

36 min: Marcus Rashford goes…
