Pixel 7 Pro could take the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s crown as the best camera phone

Recent spec leaks suggested that the Pixel 7 Pro might not be a huge upgrade over the Pixel 6 Pro, but a new, more detailed leak suggests that, if nothing else, the camera could have significant improvements.

A full, and apparently official, list of specifications shared by the Google News Telegram channel (opens in a new tab) (via leaker Yogesh Brar (opens in a new tab) and Phone Arena (opens in a new tab)) includes a small detail that we had not had. Not seen before: Mention of 5x optical zoom.

The Google Pixel 6 Pro has 4x optical zoom, so if this spec leak is accurate, the Pixel 7 Pro will be able to do more optical zoom than its predecessor, and more than most other non-zoom phones too 10x of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. .

It’s not just the optical zoom that’s up, as 30x digital zoom is stated, up from 20x on the Pixel 6 Pro.

This spec list, which was originally spotted on a Taiwanese mobile operator’s website, also mentions new camera modes such as Movie Motion Blur, which as the name suggests presumably adds a blur effect to videos, perhaps like the cinema mode on the iPhone. and Macro Focus, which could allow for better macro shots.

For what it’s worth, Movie Motion Blur is also listed as a feature on the standard Pixel 7, but those other things seem to only be related to the Pixel 7 Pro.

Beyond that, the specs are basically all the stuff we’ve heard before, and for the most part, they look identical to the Pixel 6 line, though there’s mention of Face Unlock, which is something they didn’t have these phones but we have heard rumors recently. of

For now, of course, we’d take everything with a grain of salt, but we’ll know the truth very soon, as the Pixel 7 lineup will launch in full on October 6th.

Analysis: A contender for the best camera phone?

The Google Pixel 6 Pro is already high on our list of the best camera phones, and if the improvements above are anything to go by, the Pixel 7 Pro is likely to be even higher.

Will it top the list? It’s hard to say, as it faces strong competition from the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra line and the iPhone 14 Pro, but it certainly has a chance, especially since we expect other improvements to the performance of the camera beyond the obvious from a spec list.

Software tweaks are likely, and the new Tensor G2 chipset could also boost the phone’s camera capabilities.

So while it looks like the sensors won’t change much, meaning there’s still a 50MP primary camera, a 12MP ultra-wide and a 48MP telephoto, the actual capabilities could be improved significantly

Still, it remains to be seen whether this will be enough to beat the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s new 48MP camera or the impressive zoom capabilities of the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
