The moment the Queen’s coffin leaves Balmoral as the ‘final journey’ begins.
Queen Elizabeth II’s final journey has begun.
His oak coffin left Balmoral at 10am on Sunday for Edinburgh, after six of the estate’s wardens lifted it into a hearse.
Thousands of mourners walked the route to honor her.
Shortly after the cortege began its 100-mile journey, it passed through the village of Ballater, where the crowd fell silent as a sign of respect for the Queen.
Once the cavalcade arrives in the Scottish capital, Elizabeth II’s body will be taken to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
Scotland’s first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, said the “poignant” trip would give the public a chance to “mark our country’s shared loss”.
Since her death on Thursday, the Queen’s coffin, draped with the Royal Standard of Scotland and crowned by a wreath, has lain in repose at Balmoral for estate workers to say their final goodbyes.
Hundreds of miles south of the procession, large crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace to pay their respects to the late monarch.

Cameron apologizes to Queen for Scotland’s independence vote
David Cameron has revealed how he had to apologize to the Queen after revealing details of one of his private conversations about Scottish independence.
Microphones captured the then prime minister telling how the Queen “purred” into the phone when she told him the result of the 2014 referendum.
Cameron told the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg: “It was a very direct and full apology made very quickly at the start of a hearing. I think that’s all I should say.”
Asked if the Queen had rebuffed him, Mr Cameron replied: “Obviously everything that was said in those meetings is completely private.”
