New Zealand’s Jacinda Ardern says she will remember Queen’s “extraordinary” laugh
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has described being woken shortly before 5am by a police officer who lit a torch in her bedroom to tell her the news of the Queen’s death.
Under New Zealand’s constitutional arrangements, the Queen was also New Zealand’s monarch and head of state, and the country will go into a period of official mourning, with preparations underway for a state memorial service to be held after the funeral of the Queen in London.
“The last days of the Queen’s life capture who she was in many ways,” Ms Ardern said. “Working to the end on behalf of the people I loved.”
Describing the late monarch as an extraordinary woman who would be remembered for her laughter, Ms Ardern said she, like many others, felt not only deep sadness but also deep gratitude.
“Here is a woman who gave her life, totally, in the service of others,” the prime minister said. “And regardless of what anyone thinks about the role of monarchies around the world, I think here is certainly an example of someone who gave it all on behalf of his people, and his people included the people of Aotearoa, New Zealand.”

Bar Council president Mark Fenhalls used the initials KC in a statement issued after the Queen’s death on Thursday afternoon.
“The officers, members and staff of the General Bar Council of England and Wales join colleagues in the legal professions in mourning the loss of our country’s most dedicated public servant,” he said.
“Throughout a long, loyal and steadfast reign, Queen Elizabeth II embodied the symbolic role of the figure in whose name justice is done with great integrity. I have written to offer our deepest and most sincere condolences to His Majesty the King.”
