10 dead, 15 injured in mass stabbing in Saskatchewan, Canada
At least 10 people have died and 18 others have been injured in a spate of stabbings in 13 locations in the province of Saskatchewan, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
“It’s horrific what happened in our province today,” RCMP Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore said at a news conference Sunday.
Police said the victims were a mix of those chosen at random and some specifically targeted.
Officers are trying to find suspects Damien and Myles Sanderson, who were last seen driving a black Nissan Rogue with Saskatchewan license plate 119 MPI.
In an update Monday morning, Police Chief Evan Bray said officers are “confident” someone knows the whereabouts of the two suspects and asked for relevant information.
“We will not stop this investigation until we have these two in custody,” he said in a Twitter address.
Residents of the village of Weldon in Saskatchewan identified 77-year-old Wes Petterson as one of the victims, while mother-of-two Lana Head was identified as another victim by her former partner.

Police charge both men and issue arrest warrants as the number of injured rises to 18
Saskatchewan RCMP sent out another public safety alert in the province Monday morning, noting that the two wanted suspects had now been issued arrest warrants.
“Myles Sanderson is charged with: three counts, first degree murder, Section 235(1), Penal Code; one count, attempted murder, Section 239(b), Penal Code; and one count, breaking and entering: residence , section 348 (1) (b), Penal Code,” CBC tweeted Sam Maciag reported in an update Monday.

Manhunt suspect listed as ‘unlawfully at large in May’, officials say
One of the suspects wanted in connection with a series of deadly stabbings for the James Smith Cree Nation on Sunday morning was previously known to law enforcement agencies, Reuters has reported.
Myles Sanderson, 30, who is described as 6 feet 1 inch tall and approximately 240 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes, was said to have been classified by Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers as “unlawfully in freedom” in May.
Myles Sanderson, 30, is one of two suspects wanted in connection with a series of fatal stabbings that took place Sunday at 13 different locations in and around the James Smith Cree Nation in northern Saskatchewan.

The program is designed to work as an intermediary between the police and the public in an effort to find wanted people.

Veteran identified as victim of fatal stabbing in Saskatchewan
The Saskatchewan First Nations Veterans Association (SFNVA) confirmed on Facebook that one of its veterans, Earl Jones, was among the victims killed in Sunday’s brutal attacks in two northern Saskatchewan communities.
“The SFNVA is sending our sincerest condolences to the Burns family on the loss of our late veteran Earl Burns,” the group wrote, noting that Burns had been a member of the Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry.
“We would also send our thoughts and prayers to the James Smith community and the families of those affected. It is unknown at this time when we will know the details of the funeral services. When the family notifies us, we will keep the page updated.”
Earl Burns, one of the victims killed in Sunday’s stabbing attack in Saskatchewan, was identified by the Saskatchewan First Nations Veterans Association as a veteran who served with the Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry in the Canadian Armed Forces.

His son, Earl Jones Jr, also appeared to confirm his father’s death in a post shared on Facebook, where numerous friends and family expressed their condolences for his loss.
“My heart is so broken that I still needed you,” the son wrote.
In the comments below the post, the veteran was remembered by friends and family as a kind and cheerful person.
“I’ve always loved your dad,” one friend wrote. “Growing up playing hockey I remember how he made me/us laugh.”
“You had an amazing father,” wrote a friend named Linda-Marie Sanderson. “You did very well my boy, I was proud of you and you respected him.”

“There’s a lot of pain,” Regina’s police chief says in the Monday morning update
Regina Police Chief Evan Bray says the entire province and communities throughout it continue to feel on edge Monday morning as the hunt for the two suspects wanted in connection with the fatal stabbing of Sunday that left 10 people dead is still at large.
“There is a lot of pain, there is a lot of anxiety in our province and in our communities this morning and all day yesterday,” Chief Bray said in a video shared on his Twitter account.
“I really think an important step for the families and communities working on this will be to bring these two in safely. And again, if anyone has any information, I urge you to contact your local police and let us know,” he added in the early hours of the morning.

‘It’s pretty horrifying’: First Nation chief describes the horror he woke up to Sunday morning
Chief Calvin Sanderson, Chakastaypasin Band, which is one of the communities that make up the James Smith Cree Nation, told the Saskatoon Star Phoenix that his cell phone was turned off on Sunday and he was only alerted to the tragedy that had unfolded in his community when the neighbors came to check.
“Everybody has been affected,” he told a local Saskatchewan news channel.
“They were our relatives, friends. Mostly we’re all related here, so it’s pretty hard,” Sanderson said. “It’s pretty awful.”

Police are “confident” someone knows the whereabouts of two suspects
In an early morning update shared on the Regina Police Department’s Twitter account, Chief Evan Bray confirmed that efforts the night before to find the two men wanted in the fatal stabbings in Saskatchewan were unsuccessful.
“Despite relentless efforts overnight by the RCMP and the Regina Police Service to locate these two individuals, they have yet to be located. And so efforts continue,” the chief said, noting that Monday morning a “new set of investigators” would arrive to take over the investigation for the rest of the day.
“We will not stop this investigation until we have these two in custody.”
The chief also made a point to issue a plea to the public, specifically those he and other law enforcement agencies believe know the suspects’ locations.
“We know, we’re sure someone knows the whereabouts of these two and has information that would be valuable to the police. And I’m asking you to contact your local police service to let us know,” he said, earlier to say again that any information people have could be helpful in getting the community back to a safe place.
