An attempted recap of the World Cup so far…
So far we’ve had pretty much the most mental finish to a group stage I can remember, although my head is so worn out from it all that it’s probably not the best achievement.
Pools A and B went through without fuss, England (no flag) and the USA happened, as did the Netherlands and Senegal . It felt like we were on a quiet beach, without a cloud in the sky.
Then came the madman.
Saudi Arabia played against Mexico , and Poland faced Argentina in what turned out to be millions of people clamoring for Polish yellow cards so that we could have the unimaginable thrill of ‘draw’, something so simple yet incredibly fun and mysterious at the same time.
And then it just had so much more…everything.
Germany seemed to leave Costa Rica out like a lion plucking a bold mouse out of its mane, but the Central American side bit back, scoring in incredible fashion as Japan took the lead against Spain! In the end, the Germans won but did not go through, thanks to Asian heroics, but my, oh, what football we saw.
