On Friday, October 28, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food announced an upcoming information session in Maple Ridge to address bird flu concerns of small flock poultry owners.
According to Robert Boelens, director of communication for the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, this session will cover all the key information on how to treat bird flu in small flocks.
“The sessions aim to promote awareness and reduce the risk of transmission, and focus on the bird flu virus, how owners can protect their flocks and how to prepare for possible impacts if their birds they get sick,” Boelens said.

Many poultry owners have become concerned as the estimated number of birds affected by bird flu in BC has risen to 266,000, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
“Fall and spring are usually times of greater risk because of the movement of wild migratory birds,” Boelens explained.

In response, the government has invited veterinary specialists and UBC graduate student and veteran Dr. Cassandra Andrew to speak with local small-flock poultry owners.
The event is free to attend, but participants must register in advance. Anyone attending the event will receive a free biosecurity kit with all the tools and information needed to maintain good biosecurity practices.
This information session will take place at the Albion Community Center on Thursday, November 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
