The Met Office has sent out a request asking all media outlets to stop referring to it as ‘BoM’, but has had some challenges making the change on its own social media channels.
The government agency sent out a press release at 10 a.m. Tuesday, asking media outlets to change their style guides to “support” the corps.
“With an ever-increasing number of severe weather events, it is more crucial than ever that the Met Office’s ideas, wisdom, data and information are shared, understood and acted upon,” he says the statement The Met Office is trying to rebrand itself from ‘BoM’ but its own app still uses the name.. (BoM)
“To support this need, the Met Office is asking the media to update editorial style to ensure that references to the organization are by its full name, the Met Office or the Bureau for short , and not the BOM or the Met Office.
“This aligns with the Meteorology Act 1955.”
The BoM also said it would change its Twitter handles to reflect the change.
“To support this change, we are updating our primary Twitter handle to @TheBureau_Au. Our state Twitter handle will be updated to @TheBureau_NSW, @TheBureau_ACT, @TheBureau_Vic, @TheBureau_Tas, @TheBureau_Qld, @TheBureau_SA, @TheBureau_NT and @TheBureau_,” he said.

However, since the press release was sent before the Bureau made changes to its Twitter profiles, some users decided to jump on the bandwagon.
At the time of writing, all but SA and NT have been taken, some by existing accounts that changed their usernames, others by new profiles that took the not-yet-secured IDs.
The account with the Twitter handle TheBureau_Au has been suspended. (twitter)
The Melbourne-based writing company that claimed the handle Bureau_Au has had its account suspended.
The Bureau’s weather app is still called “BOM Weather” and the organisation’s website remains bom.gov.au
