The Scottish Highlands could have a white Christmas, forecasters have said.
A Met Office yellow warning is in place for most of the mountainous region and some low-lying areas from 9pm on Christmas Day until 6pm on Christmas Day.
“Frequent snow showers are likely to cause some travel disruption on higher routes,” the service said, adding that 10 cm (4 inches) of snow was expected to fall on higher ground.
The conditions could also cause power cuts and temperatures could drop as low as 1C overnight on Sunday.
Rain is forecast for many other parts of the UK over the weekend.
The Environment Agency has issued 66 alerts for possible flooding in England, and there are flood warnings, indicating that flooding is expected, in Hellingly and Horsebridge in East Sussex, in the North Sea at Roker in Sunderland and Weatherhill Stream at Smallfield in Surrey.
The Met Office’s deputy chief meteorologist, David Oliver, said: “An unsettling Christmas weekend is on the way for many, with those in the north and west experiencing the most frequent and heaviest showers.
“Strong winds will affect some coasts over the weekend with storms in places, particularly in the north and west.
“Christmas Day will be unsettled for many, with the most frequent showers in the northern half of the UK and some more sporadic and mostly lighter showers further south.”
