© Reuters. Will Google’s Pixel Watch end Apple Watch’s dominance?
Alphabet (NASDAQ:) Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG ) (NASDAQ: GOOGL ) Google recently confirmed the existence of its rumored Pixel Watch — its version of Apple Inc.’s Apple Watch. (NASDAQ: NASDAQ:).
What happened: Google announced the Pixel Watch at Google I/O 2022, and it’s likely to launch after debuting on October 6 at an event alongside the Pixel 7. The fact that the product made it through the bluetooth special interest group. checks in April is another indication that it is about to launch. Although many already expect this new device to become the Apple Watch’s most formidable competitor, Loup Funds co-founder Gene Munster said in May that Google will have a hard time competing with the Cupertino giant in the market for wearable.
Why it’s important: The Pixel Watch’s fitness tracking will likely build on the capabilities of devices made by Fitbit, a company acquired by Alphabet in late 2019. This could be one of the Pixel Watch’s most popular features, having considering Fitbit’s improvement. suite is more than Google’s underwhelming health app. The device is expected to have Fitbit workout tracking, active zone minutes and other health tracking tools. The device will also have the same type of sensors found on the Fitbit Luxe and Charge 5 with a heart rate sensor that supports SpO2 and ECG readings.
The rumored $399 price tag for the LTE model puts the Pixel Watch in aggressive competition with Apple’s cellular-enabled device, which costs an extra $100 for the smaller 41mm version. The two devices are also likely to have a lot in common considering Taiwan’s Compal Electronics, the expected Pixel Watch maker, also made Apple’s wearable.
Google is reportedly working on up to six interchangeable Pixel Watch straps that would launch alongside the new wearable. Still, Alphabet’s take on the Apple Watch may be quite underwhelming in some compartments. That’s especially considering it’s rumored to ship with a 10nm Exynos 9110 chip, the same one we saw in the original Samsung (LON: ) Galaxy Watch from 2018 along with a BioActive biometric sensor to measure heart rate , the electrocardiogram and the percentage of body fat it was. introduced in August 2021’s Galaxy Watch 4. However, a tweet from Qualcomm (NASDAQ: ) suggests that the Pixel Watch could include the new Snapdragon Wear 5100 system on a chip.
Google’s latest device will likely ship with a coprocessor meant to help with performance and possibly more than 1.5GB of random access memory along with 32 gigabytes of storage space, enough to store more than 9,500 average songs on board. The rumored 300mAh battery is larger than those found in the Galaxy Watch 4, but smaller than the Apple Watch 7. This battery will reportedly not allow more than a day of use on a charge rumored 110 minutes, the same charging time as the Galaxy Watch 4, showing the lack of fast charging.
A Wear OS revival: The device will run Wear OS, Google’s own smartwatch operating system, which has seen little love from the company, leaving it a high-potential platform plagued by too many bugs which depend on everyday life. However, the infamously unstable OS was updated and most recently showcased on the Galaxy Watch 4, and more improvements are expected with the launch of the Pixel Watch.
Alphabet can bank on its superior AI skills and put Google Assistant, arguably a far superior service compared to Siri, front and center on its watch. Despite Google’s best artificial intelligence systems, it will still be difficult for the company to beat the Cupertino giant at its own game, which means that we will see some pretty interesting developments in the near future.
