23-year-old hero pulls elderly neighbors out of Brisbane house on fire

A neighbor who rushed to save two older brothers from their burning home in Brisbane’s south overnight has been hailed as a hero.

Engineer John McGann, 23, said he ripped a closed front door off its hinges to enter the main house fire on Gloucester Street in Highgate Hill in a brave effort to save a brother and a sister.

“We just heard these kids yelling ‘fire’ and I ran out and saw the house and smoke,” he told 9news.

“I ran to the front door and it was locked.

“The house was full of stuff and equipment, so we had to take the doors off and get a couple of things out of the house and I went into the house and got them.”

Footage has emerged showing the moment flames lit up the sky and thick smoke billowed from the city center property.

“I was asleep and it was like exploding, like fireworks,” said a young neighbor.

“Then we went out to see it and it was a fire on fire, like, three or four times the height of the house.”

The fire broke out around 10pm this Saturday and was extinguished three hours later around one in the morning.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, the home was “fully involved with a large volume of smoke and flames.”

“Initial reports of occupants possibly missing, further investigation found all individuals were out of the building,” Queensland Fire and Rescue’s Keith Hansen said.

Several fire trucks attended the scene and crew members are now investigating what caused the incident.
