BAKER WINS GOLD AS ENGLAND RAGE
Georgia Baker has won Australia’s first gold medal of the day after sweeping the women’s road cycling race.
It was a grueling race that pushed the six-strong Australian contingent to the limit, but they ran to perfection as a team, controlling the field over the 112km race to shut down rival attacks before perfectly setting up the sprint finish by Baker.
“The girls did an amazing job covering all the moves. For them to get the final lead made my ride so easy. I ended up with fresh legs and that was the goal. I sprinted and crossed the line with my hands,” he said.
Baker, who claimed two golds on the track, was joined on the podium by teammate Sarah Roy, who finished third.
England’s Anna Henderson, who won silver in this week’s time trial, raved about the “boring” Australian tactics.
“It was a rubbish race. The Australians had a very boring race plan,” he said, having repeatedly tried to break away from the peloton during the race only to be shut down by the Australian contingent.
“I thought, ‘You’re strong enough to win the race, be on the break and win the sprint,’ so why don’t you run the race? I wanted it to be active because I knew it was a course for that.”
“The Aussies played it very dull, they didn’t really show it.”

AFTER HEART AFTER HOSPITALIZATION AUSSIE STAR
An injury-ravaged Australian cycling contingent for the men’s road race managed to place Lucas Plapp in sixth place with an impressive finish.
New Zealand’s Aaron Gate became the first Kiwi to win four gold medals in a Games with a stunning sprint at the death, finishing ahead of South Africa’s Daryl Impey and Scotland’s Finn Crockett.
Australian cycling star Rohan Dennis was unfortunately forced to withdraw from the men’s road race, joining Caleb Ewan on the sidelines.
A statement from Aus Cycling said: “Rohan Dennis will no longer participate in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games following medical advice.
Dennis, who won gold in the men’s individual time trial on Thursday, woke up Saturday morning uncomfortable and was taken to a local hospital for tests and observation.
As a precaution, Dennis has been advised to withdraw from today’s road race, but remains comfortable and under observation.”
Australia’s six-man squad for the event was thus reduced to four, with Luke Durbridge, Luke Plapp, Miles Scotson and Sam Fox competing.

BARBER SURVIVES AUSSIE ESSACITY IN THRILLING JAVELIN FINAL
Despite throwing two personal bests, Mackenzie Little couldn’t dethrone Kelsey-Lee Barber as she claimed her first Commonwealth Games gold medal.
Barber, who recently came out of isolation from Covid-19, took the lead with his first throw of 63.52m, but Little quickly went ahead and set a new personal best of 64.03m .
Little then further widened the gap at the top with a throw of 64.27m as he once again broke his personal best.
But under enormous pressure, Barber threw 64.43m to see off Little and win gold.
Barber told Seven: “I’m still in a bit of shock actually. My brain is a blur, I don’t know what happened!”

SILVER FOR BOW IN ‘SUPER SLOW’ RACE
Australian superstar Peter Bol was favorite to win gold in the men’s 800m final, after qualifying fastest, and was hoping to become the first Australian to win the event in 40 years. He started strongly and led the pack, but it was a relatively slow and tactical race that did not suit his style.
Wycliffe Kinyamal, the defending champion from Kenya, hit hard on the home straight and Bol just couldn’t quite catch him, finishing with a superb silver.
“What a vibe and atmosphere, so close, but he’s going to take second place today,” Bol told Seven. “I’m really happy with it, to be honest. It was a weird race again, super slow but the 800 is super tactical.
“I thought, keep calm, relax, but he (Kinyamal) is very strong and he kept going. It’s just running, I ran as best as I could and I fell short, but … silver medal at the Games in the Commonwealth, we are second, which is very good.
BRONZE BY CALDWELL
Australia narrowly missed out on a double podium in the women’s 1,500m final, but Abbey Caldwell took bronze after a sensational late charge.
His teammate Linden Hall finished fourth, the same result as four years ago on the Gold Coast.
“I can’t believe it, this is a dream come true,” Caldwell told Channel 7 after the race. “It means a lot to do it with these girls here (Hall and Jessica Hull), while this crowd is amazing. I can’t believe it.”
