Liz Cambage to leave LA as Sparks announces ‘divorce by contract’

Liz Cambage and the Los Angeles Sparks have agreed to a “divorce by contract,” leaving the Aussie star in search of a new WNBA home.

Cambage signed with the Sparks in February after controversially withdrawing from the Tokyo Olympics and the Opals squad following claims he had racially abused Nigerian opponents during a warm-up match.

Cambage denied the claims.

“It is with support that we share Liz Cambage’s decision to terminate her contract with the organization,” Sparks managing partner Eric Holoman said in a statement.

“We want the best for Liz and have agreed to part ways amicably. The Sparks remain excited about our core group and are focused on our run to a playoff spot in 2022.”

Cambage told ABC Sport in May that she felt supported at the Sparks following her controversial exit from the Opals.

“I’m living my best life. I’m supported, I’m protected at a level that the Opals or the Australian national team never gave me,” she said.

“My heart goes out to those who want to protect me and those who want me to be the best I can be, and I never felt that at the Opals, so yeah I’m fine.”
