Salman Rushdie ‘conscious and alert’ after stabbing

Sir Salman Rushdie is said to be “conscious and alert” after being stabbed more than a dozen times while giving a speech on freedom of speech.

The news is the first positive indication of the condition of the perpetrator who is in hospital after Friday’s attack in New York state.

Hadi Matar, 24, appeared in court accused of attempted murder, where he pleaded not guilty.
