The FIFA World Cup 2022 continued Saturday on FOX with France beating England, 2-1, at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, Qatar, in the final quarterfinal game of the tournament.
World Cup champions France hope to join Italy i brazil as the only countries in World Cup history to win back-to-back tournaments. With Saturday’s win, France have won their last 12 World Cup matches.
France will advance to play Morocco, who defeated Portugal earlier on Saturday, in Wednesday’s semi-final match.

France striker Olivier Giroud didn’t hold back when he went close to scoring early on.

Giroud had another attempt minutes later, this time with a header, but England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saved it.

Midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni was the star of the show early on, opening the scoring with a goal for France.

French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris made back-to-back crucial saves as England touched down, first on defender Luke Shaw and then on the England captain. Harry Kane – to maintain the three lions off the board altogether.
With Saturday’s start, Lloris became the most capped player in France men’s national team history (143).
Meanwhile, no penalty was awarded in that challenge on Kane as he made another move close to the net moments later.

Kane had another shot close to the half-hour mark, and Lloris again saved it, this time into the top right corner.
Thus, France held on to a 1-0 lead at half-time, but not before Antoine Griezmann picked up the first yellow card of the game in the 43rd minute.

Ousmane Dembélé received a yellow card in the first minute of the second half, but this did not alter the French rhythm. Lloris continued to make one move after another, saving Jude Bellingham’s shot just outside the goal.
54′: Penalty
Things changed when Bukayo Saka equalized from a free-kick in the box early in the second half. Kane kicked the penalty against Tottenham team-mate Lloris in the first game between them in five-and-a-half years.
With this goal, Kane tied Wayne Rooney for the most goals in the history of the England men’s team with 53.

France’s Giroud came up big when it mattered most, connecting with a header late in the second half to put France back in front, 2-1.

England were awarded their second penalty, this time following a VAR review, and Theo Hernandez was shown a late yellow card.
Kane took his second penalty against club mate Lloris, but this time he missed the target.
Thus, France remained in the lead, 2-1.
90’+11′: Down to the wire
It all fell to England’s Marcus Rashford, who had just entered the game in the 85th minute. He was awarded a free-kick in the last minute of Saturday’s game, but his shot was too high and went over the bar. net.
With that, France secured victory and became the first reigning champions to advance to the semi-finals since Brazil in 1962 en route to back-to-back titles.

Saturday’s game was the third World Cup match between these two nations, with England having won the previous two meetings in 1966 and ’82.
However, France had lost just one of their last eight meetings with England – a friendly in November 2015.
